In October 1953, the USAF requested that two F-101As be built as prototype YRF-101A tactical reconnaissance aircraft. These were followed by 35 RF-101A production aircraft. The RF-101A shared the airframe of the F-101A, including its 6 g limit, but replaced the radar and cannons with up to six cameras the reshaped nose. It was unusual having provision for both flying 1957, replacing the RB-57 Canberra. Described as one of the best-kept secrets of World War II, the Airacomet was the first jet-propelled airplane the United States. It was such a hush-hush project that hundreds of flights had been made the radically new machine before it was announced to the public 1943. I believe this photo to be of the XP-59 since there is no tail number and is the older paint scheme. Anyone??? Great vintage photo showing a B-52 with two GAM-77 Hound Dog missiles. The Hound Dog was originally designated B-77, was redesignated GAM-77 and then became the AGM-28. North American Aviation designed the missile so that two could be carried on specially modified B-52s, one beneath each wing. The navigation systems of the B-52 and the GAM-77 were integrated so the B-52 navigator could cross-check data with the automated system the Hound Dogs. I actually believe these to be two XGAM-77 Missiles based on their early paint scheme. KB-50s were B-50 bombers modified by the Hayes Aircraft Corporation to permit the aerial refueling by hose of up to three fighter-type aircraft at one time. This photo shows KB-50, a c 8123, which was converted to KB-50, 1956 and carried out the first triple-point refuelling operation by a KB-50D. a c 8123 later converted to KB-50J.
